New Year’s ‘Not So’ Resolutions

All year we are bombarded with articles and blogs like these: “How to Score Your Next Promotion,” How to be Successful Before 5am,” or “How to Loose Those 5 Extra Pounds.” Not this time, not this blog. It is the New Year, and here at ShopKenora we say it’s time to enjoy some ‘you time’ and get your cozy on. We spend all year cramming, rushing and stressing; this is the one time of the year that we make resolutions and new plans, but sometimes that just add more to your plate! This New Year embrace the cold weather – if you’re having a hard time letting go, here’s a few suggestions to help you unwind.

Nuzzle into a nook.

Creating a space that is warm, welcoming and (of course) cozy is a great way to make sure that you’re taking the time to relax and unwind, and to finish that book that has been collecting dust since September. This doesn’t mean you have to go on a shopping binge and redo your entire family room. Pick a corner of the house – it could even be a walk-in closet! Fill it with blankets, bean bags, extra pillows, a dim lamp or even a few strung lights. Once you nuzzle in, you won’t want to peel yourself away!

Game on.

Get into the basement and pull out the board games. If space permits, set up a card table near the fireplace where you can work on a 1,000 piece puzzle or play games at during your time time off from work and school. There is no better way to bond with the family than some good ol’ competition!

In a cup or a bowl, heat it up.

Nothing says cozy like a hot cup of joe or some warm comfort food. If you’ve had enough of your couch and the walls inside your home, venture out to treat yourself to a sweet morning with a silver bells white mocha or finish your evening with a boozy coffee before heading back to hibernation.

Hop into a new hobby.

If you’re anything like the rest of us, your Pinterest board is filled with a bunch of DIY crafts that you have yet to actually try. Take some time over the next few weeks and give it a go! Pick up some yarn and learn to knit a scarf, get your photos developed to make a wall collage, turn your old college t-shirts into a quilt (that you can add to your cozy reading corner!).

Reflect.

The month of January is a great time for reflection. Take some time to think about the past year – are you where you want to be? Did you achieve the goals you set one year ago? What could you have done differently? What are you most grateful for? Find yourself a journal, yes – actual pen and paper, and start jotting down your thoughts each morning. This is a great habit to get into – once it’s time to set your new goals you will already have the habits in motion to keep up the momentum.

Most importantly, be sure to be true to yourself. It’s one of the times of year, when it can be extremely busy and easy to lose yourself. Give yourself permission to unapologetically unplug and disconnect from the outside world, Surround yourself with the people you love, cozy up with a blanket, or just get lost with yourself and put some energy back into you!
